Professor Melbye is a Danish physician and internationally recognized medical epidemiologists. He is Director of the Danish Cancer Institute and Research Director at the Danish Cancer Society, while also holding a professorship in Epidemiology at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and a visiting Professorship at Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine, USA. Within Cancer Prevention Europe (CPE), he represents the Danish Cancer Society as member of the Steering Group — the consortium’s core decision-making body.

Melbye’s expertise spans cancer epidemiology, population health science, infectious disease, and life-course research using large-scale registries and biobanks. He is the founder of the Danish National Biobank that contains more than 30 million specimens from Danes. He is former State Epidemiologist of Denmark and CEO of Statens Serum Institut. Relevant to CPE, he has chaired both the scientific and the governing councils at the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyon, France.
