Mangesh Thorat is an oncoplastic breast surgeon based in London, United Kingdom and his research primarily focusses on cancer prevention. His cancer prevention research is underpinned by three main strands of work. The first of these is cancer epidemiology with a focus on drug repurposing, for example, Aspirin. The second strand involves early detection and prognostic biomarkers, with a special focus on DCIS. And the third strand is cancer prevention / early detection clinical trials, with a special focus on breast cancer prevention. He serves on steering committees of multiple international cancer prevention societies, multinational cancer prevention trials as well as on research funding committees of multiple cancer charities across Europe. He also associated with multiple journals in the field of surgery, cancer and breast cancer in senior editorial roles.
Mangesh Thorat is a member of the “Cancer Prevention Europe” steering committee, representing the “UK Therapeutic Cancer Prevention network”, one of CPE’s member organisations. Apart from being a practicing cancer clinician with day-to-day patient interface experience, he also brings therapeutic prevention and cancer epidemiology expertise to the CPE deliberations.
I am privileged to be a member of the CPE steering committee alongside international key opinion leaders and leading scientists within the cancer prevention field. The regular CPE deliberations and discussions are not only intellectually enriching for myself but also lead to important outputs to shape research direction within the field as well as shape policy in order to reduce the cancer burden in Europe. CPE represents the much-needed commercial interest-free voice to move cancer prevention forward.
